Bulgarian Vets Prepare for Avian Influenza

USAID/Bulgaria completed training for 432 state and private veterinarians in five locations in Bulgaria on the essentials of controlling highly pathogenic Avian Influenza. The training was the first of its kind to train state and private veterinarians together, laying the groundwork for the kind of cooperation that would be needed in the event of an actual outbreak. The involvement of both European and American experts also made the training unique.

The highly successful two-week course was the product of strong collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as well with the Bulgarian State Veterinary Service. Discussions for follow-up actions are now underway. The training will serve as a model for the rest of the Europe and Eurasia region and potentially beyond.

Four positive cases of Avian Influenza were confirmed in Bulgaria this year, but there has been no outbreak in domestic poultry. Total U.S. Government funding for Bulgaria’s Avian Influenza preparedness is more than $1 million.
