Anti-Trafficking Shelter Quietly Marks 200 Women Served

Since its opening in December 2004, 200 trafficking victims have accessed critical support from the USAID-funded shelter in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The center, supported through USAID’s Combating Trafficking in Persons project, provides services for girls and women who have fallen prey to human traffickers and helps them reintegrate into society. To this end, the center organizes trainings for women to develop their job skills such as hair-dressing, baking, and sewing, and helps them to overcome the social barriers often faced upon their return home.

Uzbekistan is a source and transit country for women trafficked to Russia, Japan, Southeast Asia and the Middle East; a significant number of Uzbek victims are trafficked each year.

In addition to supporting the shelter, USAID programs train professionals to assist trafficking victims
