Largest U.S. Humanitarian Aid Project in Kyrgyzstan Launches
A handover ceremony of donated medical equipment to four hospitals in Bishkek and the City Ambulance Service was held in August 2007 at Kyrgyzstan’s National Center of Oncology. The event marked the completion of the largest single U.S. humanitarian assistance project for Kyrgyzstan since its independence from the Soviet Union.
The program, Operation Provide Hope, is a humanitarian medical program funded and managed by the U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Coordinator for U.S. Assistance to Europe and Eurasia. Since its inception in September 2004, approximately $42.3 million worth of medicines, medical supplies, and equipment has been delivered to health care facilities in Kyrgyzstan. USAID has participated in the program by contributing key supplies and reagents needed to operate the donated equipment.
Operation Provide Hope supports the implementation of health care reforms initiated by the Ministry of Health with USAID technical assistance to develop a primary health care system in Kyrgyzstan.
