Northwest Azerbaijan Leaders Awarded for Community Action

On April 2, 2008 in Gakh, USAID’s Community Development Activity (CDA) hosted an awards ceremony for CDA program participants in northwest Azerbaijan. Those honored were Community Development Councils members elected during the program and regional and local government officials whom had collaborated on the implementation of projects over the past two years.

The program graduated 25 communities that had worked on the development of local Community Development Councils, building citizen/government collaboration and implementing a combined total of 95 community projects valued at more than $500,000. Projects included road work, as well as potable water supply, electrical systems, and school renovations.

Neil McCullagh, Country Director for CHF International—the CDA implementer—expressed his congratulations to community members and government representatives on their successes and encouraged communities to continue their commitment to citizen participation and active involvement with local government. “Functioning democracy depends on effective local government and local government depends on active and committed citizens. So strengthening of democracy in Azerbaijan depends on each and every citizen,” he urged.

After several presentations detailing community’s efforts, experiences, and knowledge gained through trainings, CHF International staff presented citizen leaders and government representatives with awards for their outstanding commitment and contributions to improving their communities.
