Ag Fair Deals Total 1.5 Million Euros for Serbian Farmers

Thanks to support from USAID agribusiness and economic security projects, 13 Serbian agribusinesses and associations participated in the 75th International Agricultural Fair in Novi Sad—the largest event of its kind in Southeast Europe. Participants presented their products to local and international buyers and negotiated contracts worth approximately 1.5 million Euros, or US$2.35 million.

Serbian agribusinesses say that Novi Sad and other international agricultural fairs offer valuable opportunities to promote their products and expand into new markets.

USAID projects work with Serbian businesses to increase market-driven agricultural product sales and exports and to assist businesses to expand and reach new, higher value markets by finding more buyers for their products and services. “The Novi Sad Fair is the right place to achieve that,” says Remer Y. Lane, Marketing and Export Expert for the USAID Agribusiness Project.

The 13 USAID-supported companies and cooperatives are promising businesses from all over Serbia, each equipped with a sound growth strategy and the potential to gain larger market shares and expand into new markets. USAID’s support, worth about US$40,000, entailed the construction and design of a joint stand, refrigerator and cooler rentals at the fair, and the design and printing of brochures, flyers, posters and other promotional materials. USAID also provided training on effective sales and efficient trade show participation.

“We saw our participation at the fair as a great chance for us to make new contracts and enter markets in neighboring countries,” says Predrag Radovanović, owner of Moravica from Arilje, a berry and forest fruit processing company and frozen pastry producer. Another USAID-sponsored participant agrees, “Something happens after each fair, whether we export to new markets or find new buyers for our products—in either case, our sales increase.”

USAID also helps Serbian agricultural producers participate at international fairs abroad and has supported the participation of Serbian agribusinesses at world’s top international fairs in Berlin, Nurnberg, and Dubai this year, where Serbian companies signed export contracts worth potentially US$20 million.
