Milestone Survey Reveals Azerbaijan’s Health Gains, Challenges

Azerbaijan’s State Statistical Committee presented findings from its first-ever Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) at a national conference in Baku on June 24, 2008. The 2006 survey was funded by USAID ($1.65 million), UNICEF ($50,000), and implemented by USAID partner MACRO and the State Statistical Committee.

According to the survey, 70 of every 1,000 women in Azerbaijan will have at least one abortion in her lifetime. Although this represents a sharp decline from the 2001 statistic of 116, it remains higher than comparable rates in neighboring countries. The DHS also shows that 40 percent of children between 18 and 29 months of age have not received all of the basic, recommended vaccinations.

In her remarks, U.S. Ambassador Anne Derse emphasized these and other areas where additional efforts are needed to produce further health improvements. Other speakers at the event included Arif Veliyev, Chairman of the State Statistical Committee, Arif Veliyev; Hanaa Singer, Country Representative of UNICEF; and, representatives from Azerbaijan’s Cabinet of Ministers, Presidential Office, Ministries of Health, Labor and Social Protection and Education.
