Most Recent Disaster Declaration:
Typhoon, 10-01-2009
On September 29, Typhoon Ketsana made landfall in Vietnam with wind speeds of approximately 93 miles per hour, bringing sustained heavy rains in 12 provinces throughout central Vietnam. Prior to landfall, the Government of Vietnam (GoV) evacuated an estimated 370,000 people. In the days following landfall, the GoV reported that floods and landslides resulting from the typhoon affected 3 million people, caused 92 deaths, injured 81 people, and left 10 others missing. The typhoon and subsequent floods also destroyed 6,000 houses and damaged more than 163,000 buildings, roads, and 14,000 hectares of rice. The GoV mobilized search and rescue teams and air assets to evacuate flood-affected populations, and assisted with debris cleanup efforts. The U.S. Embassy in Hanoi reported damages in five of the 12 affected provinces of more than $120 million.
On October 1, U.S. Ambassador Michael W. Michalak issued a disaster declaration due to the effects of Typhoon Ketsana. In response, USAID/OFDA provided $100,000 through USAID/Vietnam to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in support of relief operations of the Vietnam Red Cross.
Additional Disaster Declarations:
Floods, 11-13-2008
Persistent and heavy rainfall in Vietnam from October 30 to November 4 led to severe flooding in 20 northern provinces and the capital city Hanoi. The floods resulted in at least 85 deaths, destroyed or damaged more than 100,000 houses, and significantly affected infrastructure and agricultural crops, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). Submerged streets in Hanoi led to market and school closures and prompted the Government of Vietnam to issue disease outbreak alerts. The U.S. Embassy in Hanoi reported total economic losses at more than $440 million.
On November 13, U.S. Ambassador Michael W. Michalak issued a request for USAID/OFDA assistance due to the effects of the floods. In response, USAID/OFDA provided $50,000 through USAID/Vietnam to IFRC for the distribution of emergency relief commodities to affected populations.
