WASHINGTON, DC - Early Tuesday morning a structural weakness was discovered in the roof of the building serving as the primary office facility for the U.S. Agency for International Development in Baghdad, Iraq.

The problem did not occur as a result of indirect fire or other conflict-related attack on the building. No personnel were injured and there was no internal damage to the building or property of the U.S. Government. The concern was identified in advance of employees' arrival at work and contingency working arrangements were put in place for the safety of USAID employees. Program implementation continued without interruption.

The Agency is engaging specialists on site to evaluate the structural integrity of the building, which was constructed in 2005 for the USAID Mission. Following a detailed assessment, USAID will be able to determine the appropriate next steps.

The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development, have provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for nearly 50 years.
